Jamia Hamdard

Jamia Hamdard was declared as a deemed to be University in 1989 by way of a notification issued by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India. Inspired by the Islamic ideal of charity and motivated by his desire to help in the educational advancement of Indian Muslims, Hakeem Abdul Hameed set up a number of educational institutions in the field of Unani medicine, Pharmacy, Islamic studies and Nursing out of the earnings of Hamdard Wakf.  He also established Majeedia Hospital, where both the modern as well as Unani system of treatment were available to the patients. All these institutions coalesced into Jamia Hamdard when it become a deemed University in 1989. In deference to the wishes of the founder, the promotion of Unani Medicine and highlighting the contribution of Muslims to the Indian civilization got due place among the aims and objects of Jamia Hamdard.

The University was inaugurated by the then Prime Minister of India, Shri Rajiv Gandhi, who addressed a large gathering of students, teachers and members of the Jamia Hamdard Society on August 1, 1989. In his inspiring inaugural address, he applauded the efforts of Hakeem Abdul Hameed in setting up a number of institutions of learning, which finally emerged in the form of the present University. He said, “This will enable (the Muslim) minority to march forward”.

Jamia Hamdard considers itself to be an institution different from the others in view of the personal stamp of Hakeem Abdul Hameed on the ethos and work culture in the campus. Even those who have never met the Founder are inspired by his vision of setting up of an institution which would contribute and address the problem of educational backwardness of Indian Muslims.

In recognition of the University’s contribution to the teaching and research, the National Assessment and Accreditation council (NAAC), a constituent body of the University Grants Commissions, conferred on it ‘A’ Graded in the accreditation exercise during March, 2003.

The University concentrates on professional courses which equip the students to get placement in the highly competitive job markets in the country and abroad.

Recognizing the mandate of Jamia Hamdard, the Government of India, Ministry of Human Resources Development has declared it a Religious Minority Institution established and administered under Article 30(1) of the Constitution of India and allowed to reserve 50% of the seats for admissions to Muslim minority candidates in all the Programmes of study.
